Do You Remember?

The Goops

by Gillette Burgess

The Goops they lick their fingers
And the Goops they lick their knives:
They spill their froth on the tablecloth
Oh, they lead disgusting lives!
The Goops they talk while eating,
And loud and fast they chew;
And that is why I'm glad that I
Am not a Goop, are you?
---
---
I seem to remember Dad being able to recite this poem from memory. I also remember Dad yelling, "You GOOP!" when I spilt things or made a mess at the dinner table. On the subject of family literature," do you remember when Mom used to read us this?

Yes, I remember both of these. Especially the bear story...We were really little and Mom could make the story come alive. Of course at that age I had no idea the story was written (and read) in dialect. Now looking back she was really good at it. I even bought the book when Sarah and Leslie were little but I didn't have the skill to do the reading justice. When Mom did it it was truly an artistic preformance. Wish I had a recording of her reading of The Bear Story. But I am blessed to have the memory that you helped me to revisit.

Anna,

I don't know if the books are still in print. The Authour is James Whitcomb Riley and I found the complete text of the bear story, along with all his poems and other works, on this website.

James Whitcomb Riley also wrote a poem about Little Orphan Annie that was designed to scare children into obedience. The catch phrase was ...and the gobblins will get ya if you don't watch out...

It occurred to me that you might have been asking about "The Goops."

The title of that book is "The Goops and how to be them" and according to "thegoops.com" website, the book is recently back and print and can be ordered online.
